Turbo Molecular Vacuum Pumps
Turbo molecular vacuum pumps (TMPs) are high-speed, high-vacuum pumps that achieve ultra-high vacuum levels (down to 10⁻⁹ Torr or better) by using rapidly spinning rotors with blades to impart momentum to gas molecules, directing them toward the exhaust.
Why Choose Shimadzu Turbo Molecular Pumps?
- Hybrid ceramic/magnetic bearing design for long service life and low vibration
- Excellent hydrogen compression ratio (ideal for mass spectrometry)
- Lab-ready packages include controller, power supply, and cooling fan
- Mounting in any orientation for flexible installation
- Low running costs and high reliability
How Turbo Molecular Pumps Work
A turbo molecular pump operates at very high rotational speeds (typically 20,000–90,000 RPM). Gas molecules entering the pump collide with the angled rotor blades and are driven toward the foreline (usually backed by a roughing pump such as a rotary vane or dry scroll pump). This molecular drag principle enables extremely low pressures unattainable by mechanical pumps alone.
Key Advantages
- Achieves ultra-high vacuum (UHV) levels
- Clean, hydrocarbon-free vacuum when properly backed
- Low vibration and noise with hybrid bearings
- Compact and reliable for laboratory use
- Long maintenance intervals
Popular Models We Carry
- Shimadzu TMP-B70 Lab Ready Package – Compact model for smaller systems
- Shimadzu TMP-B300 Lab Ready Package – Higher pumping speed for larger chambers and demanding applications
Best Applications
- Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS, LC-MS)
- Electron Microscopy (SEM, TEM)
- Surface analysis and thin film deposition
- Particle accelerators and research chambers
- High-vacuum coating and sputtering
- Any application requiring ultra-high vacuum
Note: Turbo molecular pumps require a backing (roughing) pump and must not be exposed to atmospheric pressure while spinning.
